SMILE Camp is an interactive inquiry-based learning experience designed for AIG students that will engage your child like never before! Through our unique applications of science and math we will inspire a fervor for learning the wonders of science and math. SMILE Camp was created to address the needs of academically/intellectually gifted students to explore real science while doing so among peers. SMILE began as a partnership between the Academic and Intellectually Gifted Department of Wake County Public Schools (WCPSS) and the North Carolina State University Department Materials Science & Engineering. For MUCH more information, see the video above, download the flyer below, and visit the SMILE Camp website at: http://smilecamp.org/! The 2015-2016 Academic Year Saturday program dates are:
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The IB learner profile represents 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools. We believe these attributes, and others like them, can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national and global communities. At Smith Magnet Elementary School, the IB learner profile is an important aspect of our daily instruction. We believe it will help create a student who is committed to lifelong learning. This month's trait is: Principled Click below for the form if you would like to share your definition and experience!
Students in grades K-12 are invited to participate in a national recycling awareness contest sponsored by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and JASON Learning. The theme of this year's contest is "Recycling is Bigger than the Bin!" Most of the recycling we see today happens in the blue bin in your house. We recycle our paper, newspapers, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and steel food cans by placing them in the blue bin and putting it on the curb once a week. That's easy! But what about those things that are "bigger than the bin" -- how are those recycled? All around us there are items that will not fit into that bin. Everything from bicycles to skyscrapers can potentially be recycled, but not in a blue bin. Your challenge is to choose an item that is "bigger than the bin" and find a way to recycle it! Then, create an original video or poster that tells us the story of how you recycled your chosen item. Tell us about your thought process, and show us the steps you took to solve this recycling challenge. Your video or poster should educate and inspire others to think more carefully, and act differently, the next time they need to discard an item that is "bigger than the bin!" Sound like something you'd be interested in? Click the recycling bin for more information! All posters and videos are due by December 18th! |
